The Exploratory Studies & Academic Progress Department at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania is dedicated to assisting students in their success. The department is responsible for coordinating Academic Advising and the FYRST Seminar course, to ensure each student has ROCK Solid Support. The goal is to provide resources and advisement services that will assist students through their decision-making process by developing educational plans to meet their future career goals.

The mission of the SRU Success Coaching Program is to empower students to discover, reflect, and grow, becoming lifelong, courageous learners. We provide one-on-one coaching, group coaching, and a plethora of strategies, tools, and resources to students who seek growth/development in the following areas:
• Assessing and improving academic habits
• Developing effective learning/studying strategies
• Exploring academic motivation and/or interest in coursework
• Transitioning smoothly to college academic environment
• Balancing commitments, time management, and prioritization
• Identifying and coping with academic stress
• Setting and making progress on academic and professional goals
• Reaching academic progress benchmarks and/or planning and accountability with improving grades
Coaching is an individualized service available to all SRU students. Students may begin their success coaching journey by scheduling a session with a Peer Academic Coach. Use MySRU Portal (Academic Support Tools > Peer Academic Coaching) or D2L (Academic Support > Accudemia) to reach Accudemia, our academic center management system

Student Support at SRU is part of Student Affairs and acts as a central location where faculty, staff, students, parents or community members can refer a student experiencing or causing distress that interferes with learning, development and success. Student Support uses a model focused on the holistic development of the student to assist when they encounter challenges, barriers, and crises that impact their ability to be successful and safe by setting goals and connecting to the appropriate resources.

In Student Support we focus on enhancing student learning and development through one-on-one case management, Boost peer programming, behavioral intervention, and critical incident response. Students, faculty, and staff members can submit a Care referral for a variety of concerns serving as barriers to a student’s ablity to excel in the classroom and in their social environments.

Your academic advisor can assist you with most of your program related tasks such as adding, dropping or withdrawing from a class, scheduling for the upcoming semester, changing your major, or adding a minor. Academic advisors are also the best person to speak with about many of the nuances of each major such as important deadlines, expectations, and special opportunities within each department.

The Student Counseling Center (SCC) strives to facilitate the total development of students by reducing psychological problems and distress by enhancing mental health, well-being, quality of life, and supporting your aspirations. Our primary focus is on providing brief, confidential counseling aimed at helping students to succeed academically and interpersonally. When students require mental health services that are beyond the role or scope of the SCC, we will make appropriate referrals to campus and community resources.
